Presenting The Cooking Area Step, a community modern-American restaurant in the downtown Van Vorst area that commemorates Jersey City's rich history and delivers thoughtful market-inspired cuisine and craft mixed drinks in an intimate and welcoming environment. Just as proper for an after-work drink as it is for a full-course supper, The Kitchen Step provides a market-inspired contemporary American menu marked by executive chef Ryan DePersio's creative, delicious analyses of traditional American food.
In the days of the "courtly Cornelius," his estate enjoyed fantastic regional fame for its generous hospitality and its kitchen action, which used to draw in many individuals to the Van Vorst garden gate. By look nothing more than a basic piece of marble, the step held great historic significance; before it was utilized by Van Vorst as a step from his cooking area to his beautiful garden, it worked as the pedestal to a statue of King Edward III taken down in revolt by patriotic American people and served as a gravestone of Major John Smith of Britain's army, thus earning its name 'a cornerstone of liberty.' We want to honor the spirit of Cornelius' hospitality and celebrate his mark in Jersey City history by ending up fresh, inviting cuisine for all of our guests.
